UPDATE: The BBS-LA main mail server was offline since Thursday at approximately 4:00PM. We have rebuilt the server and got it back online about 2:30PM today-Saturday-
When the server comes back up all mail domains and mailboxes will be there, but all mailboxes will have a generic password. You will need to contact me to obtain the generic password. You can send me an e-mail NOW at zwergwerke@hotmail.com if you have an alternate mailbox not on our system. If not, you can call me now at 707-884-5067 or 818-606-6678. For large companies with multiple mail boxes, since the password is the same for all mailboxes, only one person needs to call or e-mail me.
You will need to go to http://server2.bbs-la.com/webmail and log in with the e-mail address and the generic password and then go to SETTINGS and change your password.
You will need to do this one time for each mailbox.
Mail that was sent to you since Thursday at 4:00PM is being delivered to your mailbox now but may not all arrive until later this evening due to the time it takes to process all the mail that is backlogged since Thursday.
I will send out an update later providing more detail as to what happened and what we have done to insure it does not happen again.
Some other things you need to know:
If you are a POP3 user [look in your account settings for the server type]:
Your mail is on your machine and any mail that has come in since Thursday will be delivered to you later today, so you should have lost no mail
If you are an IMAP4 user, your mail was on our server, but because we could not recover the RAID mailstore, it is no longer on our server. If you regularly back up your IMAP mail as we recommend, then you're OK. If not, depending on your mail client, you may be able to back up the mail client's shadow copy while the server is off line, or while your mail client is not connected to the server. If you do not do this, when you connect to the mail server, the server will synchronize your e-mail client with the server mail store and all your mail will be lost!.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE MAIL SERVER BEFORE YOU BACK UP YOUR IMAP E-MAIL. THE EASIEST WAY TO INSURE THIS IS TO NOT CHANGE YOUR MAILBOX PASSWORD UNTIL YOU HAVE BACKED UP YOUR IMAP MAIL STORE IN YOUR E-MAIL CLIENT.
In Outlook, set OUTLOOK to OFFLINE [File/WORK OFFLINE] and then export your mail to a *.PST file
In ThunderBird, go online, get a copy of MozBackup [MozBackup-1.5.1-EN.exe] Do a Google Search for MozBackup, download it and install it and then run the Thunderbird backup. after the server is up and runnng and you are connected, you can restore the backup to repopulate the mailstore on the mail server. [In Thunderbird, you can also just copy mail out of the Thunderbird folders to a folder on your computer [Drag 'n Drop] and then later when you're connected to the server, drag the mail back into the folders to repopulate the mail store on the server.
In Outlook Express you will have to copy the mail out of the Outlook folders into a folder on your machine. Outlook Express only back up messages from IMAPaccounts while connected to the server, which won't work in this case. Later when you're connected to the server, drag the mail back into the folders to repopulate the mail store on the server. If you have an application that backs up OUTLOOK EXPRESS IMAP accounts use it.
For other e-mail clients, you'll need to call me. First step is to see if you can back up the IMAP mail using a feature in the e-mail client. Second step is to see if you can copy the mail out of the folders to a folder on your computer. Third step is to call me for help.
SOME ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
WEBMAIL
If you use the generic link to webmail http://mail.bbs-la.com it will work later, but it isn't working now. For now you need to use http://server2.bbs-la.com/webmail which is the new actual link.
WEBMAIL ADMINISTRATION
If you use webmail as administrator of an e-mail domain, you need to go to http://server2.bbs-la.com/webadmin/ which is the new link to the WEBADMIN login page.
PASSWORDS can be changed in the WEBADMIN interface and by each individual user in their account in regular WEBMAIL

7.1.09:
BBS-LA has provided dialup access since 1995,
initially with our own equipment locally in the
Los Angeles area and since in 1998-1999 nationally
using leased lines from STARNET/MegaPOP. Many
things have changed since then. DSL and cable
Internet access has largely replaced dialup as the
preferred choice for Internet access with a
resulting consolidation of the industry into a few
large providers. In addition, StarNet/MegaPOP has
been purchased twice by succeedingly larger firms
with different business goals. Their primary focus
is no longer providing local and national dial up
access to small ISPs but rather to focus on
provide extensive leased national dial up networks
for national dialup providers and backup dialup
lines for large primary DSL and cable providers
As a result, the parent company that now controls
the StarNet/PAETEC franchise announced new monthly
minimums to go in effect 7/1/2009. These new
minimums more than double the existing minimums
and are a clear indication that the company is no
longer interested in supporting smaller
non-national ISPs. We have attempted to negotiate
a more favorable agreement with no success either
with respect to rate or implementation date.
As a result, BBS-LA is forced to stop offering
dialup Internet access as of midnight tonight,
6/30/2009. We are sorry to see this happen. We
have continued to offer dialup access for our
subscribers long after it was profitable, because
we felt strongly that it was an important part of
our service. Unfortunately, we cannot absorb the
additional loss that we would experience with the
new minimums that go into effect on 7/1/2009.
For users that pay on a month to month basis and
have already paid for July, we will be returning
your July payment within the next week. If you
have not paid your July dialup invoice, please do
not pay it. If you are a quarterly, or annual
subscriber we will be calculating refunds and
sending out refund checks during July.
We would encourage you to keep your BBS-LA
mailbox. Although we can't do much about the
cutoff of dialup access, we will continue all
BBS-LA mailboxes, until each subscriber case is
resolved to the subscribers satisfaction.
You will be receiving individual e-mails from me
in the next few days indicating the status of your
dialup account and indicating the refund due or
credit to be applied to the account if you wish to
retain your BBS-LA mailbox.
One final note: As far as what to do for Internet
access, there are a variety of choices. Look again
at DSL through your local phone company. In many
cases it is being bundled in service packages at
extremely low rates. Look again at Cable Internet
access. In many cases introductory rates are close
to dialup prices. As for dialup access, there are
a variety of national providers-NetZero, PeoplePC,
AOL, Earthlink, etc. We aren't recommending anyone
particularly, but we would not recommend Earthlink
because of their extremely restrictive e-mail
policies.
Please feel free to call me with regard to all
this. We are sorry to be giving up dialup,
particularly on such short notice... Doric
