Measuring Bandwidth Bandwidth usage is identified in two equivalent units of measurement, "average bits per second per month" and "GigaBytes of material transferred per month". Conversion between these two units of measure use a standard 30 day month and 10 bits per Byte. (While the exact conversion of bits to Bytes is 8 bits to the Byte, 10 bits to the Byte is used to reflect the additional bandwidth required for overhead. This is a relatively industry standard conversion formula.) A T-1 backbone connection consists of 24 64K bit units for a total of 1,536,000 bits per second (1.536Mbits/second). This is the equivalent of 396 Gbytes of data transferred per month.
Pricing Bandwidth The cost of bandwidth consists of two direct costs, the cost of the phone line used to connect to the backbone and the cost of the backbone access. BBS-LA allocates the full backbone access committed to each customer. Where a variable commitment is made above an agreed upon minimum, the variable amount committed to is also reserved (not sold or committed to other customers). This insures that the customer always receives the availability of the full bandwidth reserved, guaranteeing fast response. Currently BBS-LA has approximately 1024 bits/second (two thirds or 66% of a T-1) immediately available for resale. It is our recommendation that if the requirements of your site exceed this amount that you purchase and install a dedicated T-1 for your site and continue to use BBS-LA's excess bandwidth to meet your variable needs. You will find T-1 backbone access quoted by a variety of vendors at a variety of prices ranging from less than $1000.00/month to well over $5000.00 per month. This range is indicative of a wide range in commit rates (real availability of the bandwidth) and reliability. We purchase our backbone from DigiLink, Inc. in Marina Del Rey. DigiLink provides us with 7 redundant sources for backbone access from their location. In addition, they have power generation capability capable of maintaining electrical power for their systems indefinately in the case of failure of local power generation facilities. Their commit rate to us is guaranteed at 100%. As a result, we provide an exceedingly fast and responsive backbone connection. Speed, responsiveness and reliability is NOT a result of an ISP's size, so much as a result of the excess capacity maintained in the system.
